ABSTRACT:
Background: Traditional lipstick formulation often consists of petroleum-based materials, pigments, chemical preservatives and trace quantities of heavy metals. Subsequently, there is a raising demand for evidence-based lipstick formulation which has objectives related to ethical integrity, human safety and ecological sustainability. Though existing literature has studied the cosmetic uses of individual plant-related oils, waxes, and natural pigments, there exists a lack of integrated formulation approaches which completely encompasses non-toxic principles, while simultaneously matching vegan and cruelty-free needs. This present review seeks to offer a conceptual basis which might support future development of formulation, progress and experimental validation in sustainable cosmetic innovation. Methods: The present review used an evidence-based, qualitative strategy to generate a conceptual framework for a cruelty-free, non-toxic, and vegan lipstick formulation. Discussion: This conceptual formulation is proposed as a phyto-inorganic stabilized vegan lipstick system (PIS-VLS), structured to ensure safety, colour stability, and functional performance while maintaining non-toxic, cruelty-free, and petroleum-free principles. In the proposed formulation, the wax matric could provide thermal stability and firmness and the emollient system improves hydration, comfort, and colour uniformity. Additionally, inorganic pigments offer vibrant and stable colour with no significant safety concerns, and the optional fermentation-based biopolymer enhances wear performance without diminishing sensory comfort. Conclusion: The conceptualized PIS-VLS demonstrates the feasibility of substituting traditional animal-based and petroleum-derives ingredients with plant-based, and biotechnological alternatives while preserving required cosmetic performance attributes. Though experimental validation of the current formulation is needed, it provides a robust evidence-based conceptual basis for sustainable cosmetic innovation.
