ABSTRACT:
The present study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of herbal lip balm using natural ingredients with the aim of developing a safe, effective, and eco-friendly alternative to conventional synthetic lip care products. Increasing awareness regarding the adverse effects of synthetic chemicals such as parabens, artificial dyes, and petrochemicals has led to a growing demand for herbal cosmetics. In this context, six different lip balm formulations (F1–F6) were prepared using natural components including beeswax, petroleum jelly, cocoa butter, coconut oil, beetroot extract, saffron, rose oil, honey, glycerin, lanolin, and vitamin E. The formulations were prepared using the double boiler (bain-marie) method to ensure uniform melting and mixing of ingredients without degradation of heat-sensitive components. The prepared lip balms were evaluated for various parameters such as organoleptic characteristics (color, odor, and texture), physicochemical properties (pH, melting point), spreadability, stability, and skin irritability. Stability studies were conducted at different temperature conditions (25°C, 5°C, and 40°C) over a period of 30 days. The results indicated that all formulations exhibited smooth texture, good spreadability, pleasant odor, and no phase separation. The pH of formulations ranged from 6.1 to 6.7, indicating compatibility with lip skin. The melting point ranged between 61°C and 65°C, confirming appropriate consistency and stability. Hedonic scale evaluation revealed high consumer acceptability for all batches. Additionally, the incorporation of natural colorants such as beetroot and saffron enhanced the aesthetic appeal, while herbal ingredients provided moisturizing, antioxidant, and therapeutic benefits. In conclusion, the developed herbal lip balm formulations demonstrated excellent stability, safety, and efficacy, making them suitable alternatives to synthetic lip care products. Further research may focus on improving shelf life, large-scale production, and incorporation of advanced natural actives for enhanced performance.
