ABSTRACT:
Acne vulgaris is a widespread inflammatory disorder of the skin that affects approximately 9.4% of people worldwide, with the highest prevalence occurring during adolescence. It results from increased sebum production, hormonal changes, abnormal follicular differentiation, and bacterial growth, particularly Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus. Conventional treatments like antibiotics and retinoids often cause side effects, prompting interest in herbal alternatives. Medicinal plants such as Neem (Azadirachta indica) and Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) offer effective antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. To enhance therapeutic outcomes and overcome limitations of oral drug delivery. TDDS have emerged as a non-invasive, controlled-release alternative. Types of patches—single, multi layer, reservoir, and matrix—enable steady drug delivery through the skin. Future advancements in TDDS focus on long-acting patches, smart wearable systems, microneedle technologies, nanocarrier-based formulations, and advanced adhesive materials. These innovations expand the potential of TDDS to deliver complex drugs, including peptides and vaccines, offering improved efficacy, patient compliance, and personalized treatment options for chronic and acute conditions.
